When Icarus takes to the skies, the firebird unfurls its magical wings and Prokofiev's violin concerto sparks, stories and sounds merge into a fascinating experience. An evening full of myths, magic and musical splendour!
The dream of flying and youthful hubris: the legend of Icarus, who flies with self-made wings and crashes, still moves us today. Lera Auerbach's Icarus spans the arc from Greek myth to Russian folk tale. Add to this the clever musical argumentation of Samuel Barber's Second Essay, once premiered by Bruno Walter in New York. Igor Stravinsky's Suite from The Firebird and Sergei Prokofiev's sparkling Violin Concerto round off the evening. Karen Gomyo and Lidiya Yankovskaya make their debut with the Tonkünstler with this glittering programme.
Violinist Karen Gomyo performs with leading orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. She is particularly known for her interpretations of contemporary works and has given world premières with renowned orchestras. The conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya is committed to Slavic and contemporary works. As the former music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, she has premiered numerous new operas, championed the promotion of diversity in music and founded the Refugee Orchestra Project.
