A rare treasure from Bohemia: Josef Suk's late Romantic sound world meets the timeless elegance of Antonín Dvořák's Cello Concerto. With Tomáš Netopil on the podium and Julian Steckel as soloist, an evening full of dazzling musical joy and deeply felt melancholy unfolds.
The music of Josef Suk is still a rarity in this country. Tomáš Netopil passionately devotes himself to Suk's late Romantic works, here the E major Symphony from 1898, which combines Bohemian musical joy and fin de siècle. The elegiac, at times almost nostalgic attitude of Dvořák's famous Cello Concerto, which was composed in the USA in 1895, is a perfect match. Its virtuoso yet expressively singing solo part is performed by the celebrated German cellist Julian Steckel.
Julian Steckel has won numerous competitions and performs as a cellist with renowned orchestras. In addition to his solo career, he is a sought-after chamber musician and teaches as a professor at the Munich University of Music and Theatre. The Czech conductor Tomáš Netopil has been General Music Director of the Aalto Musiktheater Essen and the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra for nine years. In addition to engagements with leading orchestras worldwide, he founded the International Music Academy Kroměříž in 2018 to promote young musicians.
