With his contemporary interpretation of Romeo + Juliet, Marcos Morau paints a nightmarish picture of a world in which violence is omnipresent and unfolds a poetic parable about love and hate.
In his creation for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the Spanish choreographer reinvents the legendary tragedy of Romeo + Juliet. Inspired by Sergei Prokofiev's lyrical yet sombre orchestral work, Morau lends the classic drama a contemporary dimension. Instead of retelling the story, he concentrates on the emotional drama - the destructive power of hatred and the unfulfillable longing for love. In Romeo + Juliet, Marcos Morau creates a breathtaking visual universe with poetic musicality and a meticulously choreographed language of movement, infused with an ominous undertone.
Marcos Morau is one of the most important choreographers of our time, leads his own dance company and is Artist in Residence at the Staatsballett Berlin. He is striving for a dance future with new formats in which opera, dance and physical theatre enter into a closer dialogue than ever before.
