Tomatito returns to the Festspielhaus! The guitar virtuoso from the Gitano neighbourhood of Almería plays his way through Bulería, Soleá and Fandango in an award-winning flamenco firework display - and it becomes a family affair.
Music/Flamenco Tomatito was discovered by flamenco legend Camarón de la Isla at the age of 15. Over thirty years later, he himself is one of the greats of his art. With his love of tradition, exceptional technique and openness to fresh nuances, he carried flamenco into a new era. He moulded an entire generation of young guitar talents and expanded the musical spectrum of the genre. His 1991 album Barrio Negro is rightly regarded as a milestone. In his current programme, Tomatito plays his way through rousing flamenco nuevo classics alongside his son José del Tomate. Fiery flamenco dance interludes not excluded!
José Fernández Torres, alias Tomatito, was born in Almería in 1958 and grew up in a musical family. He moved to Málaga at the age of twelve and became a successful solo artist and ensemble musician. In 2003, he was the first flamenco guitar soloist to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Tomatito is a six-time Grammy Award winner and holder of the Gold Medal of Spanish Arts.
