What Kinga Głyk gets out of the four-string bass is breathtaking. The young jazz bassist has been shaking up the genre for a decade now. Her latest work now also shines beyond striking bass melodies.
Jazz/Funk With Real Life, Kinga Głyk presents her fifth solo album. Using electronic wind instruments and keyboards, she opens herself up to an even richer world of sound. The opener Fast Life already lives up to its name: when glittering arcade sounds and catchy melodies shred over Głyk's pulsating bass, a paradoxical balance of speed and dreamy atmosphere is created. Unfollower, on the other hand, escalates into psychedelic unease, and the funky Unseen Bruises delivers jazz between sci-fi and low-fi. Time and again, Głyk tickles unexpected sound colours out of the instrument she trusts. It's only more beautiful in concert: when the bassist races across the fingerboard of her Fender Jazz Bass, the result is a fascinating balancing act between precision and unleashed emotion.
Kinga Głyk was voted Jazz Bassist of the Year in Poland in 2015 for her solo debut Rejestracja. A little later, her version of Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven inspired an audience of millions on YouTube. Successful albums and tours followed.
